What is equivalent in math? Definition and examples


Equivalent in math is used to mean having the same amount or value. 

Some things that are equivalent in math just to mention a few

Numerical expressions

7 + 8 and 17 - 2 are equivalent numerical expressions

8 × 5 and 80÷2 are also equivalent numerical expressions

Fractions

8/8 is equivalent to 12/12 

12/3 is equivalent to 4/1

Money

100 pennies are equivalent to 1 dollar

8 quarters are equivalent to 2 dollars

Equations

2x + 5 = 15 is equivalent to 2x = 10 (found by subtracting 5 from both sides of the equation)

4x = 8 is equivalent to x = 2 (found by dividing both sides of the equation by 2)

Algebraic expressions

10x + 10y - 4x - 4y is equivalent to 6x + 6y

x + 2y + 5 + 4x + 8 + 6y is equivalent to 5x + 8y + 13
