What is Equal in Math? Definition and Examples


Equal is a term used in math to refer to things that have the same amount, size, or value.

For example, as seen in the figure above, there is an equal number of hangers and sweaters if you have 3 hangers and 3 sweaters.

Other Examples Showing How to Use the Term Equal

  • Suppose the auditorium of a movie theater has 200 seats and there are 100 males and 100 females. We can say that the number of males equals the number of females.
  • 24 inches are equal to 2 feet
  • 4 + 5 is equal to 9
